NOW is the time to join a local League of Women Voters and start making a difference in your community.
The League of Women Voters is a citizens’ organization that works to improve our government and engage all citizens in the decisions that affect their lives. We act through more than 800 state and local Leagues spanning all 50 states, as well the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Hong Kong.
Formed from the movement that secured the right to vote for women, the centerpiece of the League’s efforts remain to expand participation and give a voice to all Americans. We do this at the local, state, and federal level, engaging in both broad educational efforts as well as advocacy.
Who is eligible to join?
Membership in the League of Women Voters is open to all persons (men and women, citizens and noncitizens) at least 16 years of age. Associate non-voting membership is open to those under 16.
Why should I join? You will …
- Become more knowledgeable. You will gain knowledge and experience through the study and discussion of timely and important topics.
- Contribute to your community. Through participation in League projects, you will contribute valuable service to the community.
- Broaden your skills. You will discover new interests, develop new skills and learn about crucial issues in your community.
- Make friends and contacts. As you meet others in League who share your interests, you will make professional contacts and develop lasting friendships.
How much time does it take?
That’s up to you! Some members choose to support the League with their annual dues only. Your membership alone gives the League the political influence needed to build a voice for citizens and a force for change. However, most choose to attend monthly programs, join a committee or a study group, or attend community forums and government meetings.
What do I get?
Three memberships in one. When you join a local League you automatically become a member of the state and national Leagues. That’s three League memberships for one annual dues amount. Joining the state League as a member-at-large provides automatic membership in the national League.
National benefits. Add your voice to a powerful force of members from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Hong Kong.
State communications. Receive state legislative updates, action alerts, and our weekly e-blast, “VOTER Notes.”
Local involvement. The local League offers you opportunities to study issues and develop position statements, advocate on those issues, register voters, attend and observe government in action, convene candidate forums, and become a more active member of your community.
